Short Bio

Unidentified PRC citizen. Lu Shan, Jiangxi, China, 2001

As an undergrad student studying literature I taught myself web design skills and began working as a web programmer to pay for tuition as part-time staff for Utah State University's Faculty Assistive Center for Teaching. After completing a Bachelor of Arts in English Lit I accepted a full-time position as course web developer for USU's Distance Education Mild/Moderate Special Education program. In my "free time" I pursued a Masters of Second Language Teaching, and took on numerous freelance web projects. After completing my Masters I moved to Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, China, where I taught for the department of English at the famous Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute. In addition to pounds of porcelain art, I brought back a love for premium Chinese teas and a renewed enthusiasm for individuality and liberty.

Mr. & Mrs Stein at Himeji-Jo. Himeji, Japan, 2006

Since 2002 I have worked for Utah Valley University's department of Distance Education. I spend most of my day designing, developing, and overseeing the production of online courses with UVU faculty and my fabulous staff members. (The Instructional Design Services unit is often hiring, so watch the discussion forum for announcements!) I have been teaching for the Digital Media department since Spring 2004.

I still take the occaisional freelance or consulting project, and try to stay on top of the field of professional web design by reading blogs and publications like A List Apart and Smashing Magazine. And just for fun I create themes for WordPress, the popular open-source blogging platform.

For the past year I've been working on a PhD in Instructional Psychology and Technology. I'm focusing on online behavior, especially reading, distractibility, and attention.

In my spare time I think and write about education and technology, write fiction and poetry, enjoy books, films, music, and Chinese teas, spend time with my family, and play geeky card games, especially The Lord of the Rings TCG.
